1. Notice Who Is Left Out — Upstander action begins by noticing exclusion, bullying, or rising tension.
2. Invite and Include — A direct invitation can reduce exclusion and create belonging.
3. Interrupt Calmly — When it is safe, a brief statement can name the problem and interrupt it.
4. Distract or Redirect — A distraction can break a harmful moment without escalating it.
5. Move Toward Safety — Help the targeted person reach a safer place or group.
6. Get a Trusted Adult — Adults have responsibility and authority to respond to bullying and possible violence.
7. Document Safely — Documentation may help only when school policy allows and it does not increase risk.
8. Support Afterward — Private support after an incident can reduce isolation.
9. Report Possible Fighting — Warning signs of a possible fight should be reported before anyone is hurt.
10. Follow Up and Restore Belonging — Check in later and help rebuild a welcoming environment.
